January 2025 report: Acheru Christmas party, changes to the board, staff details, and news of a patient

Acheru Christmas party
Moses, the nine year old boy from Napak with the facial deformity, is now staying at Acheru. Following a cancer diagnosis, he goes to the Mulago cancer unit every Monday for chemotherapy.
Joyce reports: 'He is happy at Acheru, but with very low self esteem, he sometimes isolates himself and when I go with him to church, many children don't want to look at him, and avoid being near him. A nurse uses public transport to take him to Mulago for chemotherapy, but some drivers don't want to stop to pick him up and are scared looking at him. He avoids eating anything until he finds a place where no one is looking.
God has a better plan for him. He has friends at Acheru and giving him a hug speaks volumes, he sees it strange and gets shy. I am sure he sees how special we are to him.'

Acheru management: There's been a change in the Acheru board. Sam Mutumba has been with us for many years. He was with Evangelical Christian Ministries before moving to Mukono with his wife Mary to oversee Besaniya and Cherub. When we moved away from Besaniya, Sam directed the development of Acheru, taking an active role in the work and seeking to bring in more patients. More recently Mary, who was also a board member, has been in poor health and Sam has now resigned as chairman, handing over to another long serving board member Moses Kiwanuka, whose background and experience should be of value.
Moses is an occupational therapist, development practitioner, and a trained Community Based Rehabilitation Worker. At CoRSU he was head of their community outreach programme and worked in refugee settlements in northern Uganda. With the Cohere charity he helped with rehabilitation of refugee children with disabilities in a number of settlements.
