July 2014 report
Last month we told you the story of Noweline, a young diabetic girl who had been neglected by her parents. Sadly despite a great deal of medical care at Acheru, Noweline passed away last week.
At Acheru Noweline had been under the care of the nurses and in particular Margaret the matron. Her diabetes was being managed well and the feeding programme which Margaret had put her on was showing signs of success. Noweline’s mother had even built up the courage to come to Acheru to visit her daughter and plans had been put in place with another organisation to accommodate Noweline once her condition had stabilised. Finally her future was looking bright. However, years of ill management of her diabetes meant that her kidneys were no longer functioning efficiently and it was complications resulting from this which caused her untimely death. Please keep Noweline’s family and the staff of Acheru, particularly Margaret who dedicated a great deal of her time to the care of Noweline, in your prayers.

Despite such upsetting news, the work of Acheru continues to thrive with a body of committed staff and children who are grateful for the treatment they receive. It is amazing to see how the children continue to push themselves to the limit by overcoming their disabilities. Recently commonwealth fever took hold as a number of Acheru children attended a sports gala for children with special needs. The Acheru patients had a wonderful time and were capable of physical tasks beyond the expectations of the staff who accompanied them.
